Desperate Times, Desperate Measures!
Deciding that somehow, the book I was reading had become a block for my reading mojo I picked up a book that would be fast, easy and done lickity split.
Yes.
It had to be done.
MaryJanice Davidson can always be counted on for a fast read and I picked up her latest one while shopping with my book peeps (Lea, Mary, Nath and Kristie). I just couldn't help myself and I'm glad I bought the book because it's going to get me my reading mojo back again!
Small problem is that there is something fairly major that has happened in the previous book and I have no recollection of it. I mean, I'm thinking I would have remembered 'this'. All the same, I can't find the previous book (so maybe I don't have it) or I haven't exactly exhausted myself looking for it.
Cause usually, I have read the previous book, and my memory is becoming a holey mess which makes me fear too many things so let's not think too hard on it.
That said, the book also does not show up anywhere on my blog. The last reference to MJD was Undead and Uneasy and I think the last one was Undead and Unworthy.
Ah well, this book is pretty much re-capping everything that happened in the last book anyways so no worries.
By tomorrow I will have finished a book and I'll move on to the next without over thinking it.
And my reading mojo will stay put!

Sitting Idly By
Turns out I was in an eating frenzy because my body had decided it was time to hibernate.I kid you not. I went to bed at I guess 10am at the latest. Bob tried to wake me at 6pm and got my standard answer of 'one more hour?'. I remember him asking me questions 'are we going out when you get up? You needed eggs but I'm exhausted and just wanna get in my jammies. But you want eggs so I should stay dressed -'
I told him to forget the friggin' eggs and get in his jammies. He did and I went right back to sleep. I woke up when he climbed into bed. I woke up at midnight but then thought that since it was Saturday I should try to sleep longer so I would be up during the day with Bob.
2:30am I climbed out of bed.
Figuring it was Saturday I was going to watch Battlestar Galactica and do some computer stuff but something kept bothering me.
I feed the cats, do some internet and prepare to watch TV.
Wait! I didn't see LOST this week!
OMG it's only Wednesday!!
Actually it was Thursday early AM. I can't believe I couldn't remember the friggin day. I must need more protein in my diet or something.
So that's like 16 hours right? Yeah. Bad Cindy.
Bob took me out to breakfast though because I once again had to eat. Bob still had to go to work though so I'm on my own during the day. Bad things happen when I'm up during the day and Bob's not around.
I spend money.
What's saving me is my car battery is dead and the idea of getting the car booster out and boosting the car see
ms like too much energy.Yeah, I know. I can't believe my body has allowed me the energy to keep breathing.
I mean, there's lazy and then there's LAZY.
Bob plans to work from home this afternoon so really I can just wait for his car if I want to go out and get some groceries. I'm considering buying a bag of every variety of cookie known to mankind.
Okay, I won't. But it's tempting.
Also, I'm currently reading Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole and yes, I'm reading the book out of order of the series. I have come to the part where we (I) meet the hero and uh, yeah.
The guy has horns.
I'm not talking little horns.
They are described as coming out his temples and then curving around his skull (I'm thinking just above his ears so it would look like a ring around his head) and I can't say I've ever read a romance where a H/H is in a form other than human.
Yes, I've read vamps and weres and even H/H with wings (those would be downy soft though) and all that but vamps are humanoid and weres have a human side so, yeah. They look human.
I keep picturing the heroine hanging off this guys horns when they get busy.I'll let you know if I can get past it. I was really enjoying the heroine's side of things but wow, a guy with horns.
I may have to stop eating so I don't break this limb I'm hanging off of!

Book Help!!
There's a catch of course.
See, I didn't want to look like I was bragging so I didn't mention that at the end of Hostage of Pleasure there was a preview of Singh's next book called Angel's Blood.
Yowza.
Now I have to think there are books out there with something similar but how exactly do I talk about it?
Okay, the next book by Singh has Changelings as H/H and well, these two are not each other's friend.
And they go at each other.
Uh, yum!
So anyone have recommendations for a romance or romantica where there is more of an edge to the romance? Where the sex scenes might be more physical in nature than just the usual.
Ah yes. Crazy sexual tension. That's exactly it.
Anyone?

Thanks To Everyone
Today (Thursday) will be visitation and Friday will be the service. The next few days will be exhausting but I hope we do Mom justice in her final farewell.
As to other things, I am reading again and I'm counting many of my blessings. I woke up last night with a pressure on one side of my body like someone was shoving me to wake up. That was about 1am so I got up and waited for the phone call. I then told myself I was being silly but sat up and read the first half of Nalini Singh's ARC (FABOOO!!! by the way ;) - hopefully will find more time to read over the next few days and get a review up). The call came around 5am after I had convinced myself it was just my reading mojo waking me to tell me the slump was over.
Ah, well.
I'm still saying the slump is OVER!!!
Long live romance books!

Are You In The Zone?

I had my best bud up this week and luckily she is a reader like me. Although she calls romance 'chick books' it's all good. It's nice to talk to someone who reads the same way I do (or will again soon - see, positive vibes).
I told her I was in a bad slump and she laughed. Sweet woman. Anyways, she had mentioned on Facebook that she was too much in book world.
Damn. I remember when I used to be in the 'zone'.
You know when you are forced away from your book by work or laundry or cooking but all you can think about is the world you just left?
I remember reading Sam and Alyssa's book (Brockmann) and I was so immersed in the story that I started swearing like Sam. Every other word out of his mouth is 'fuck' and for a week afterwards I was stunningly witty with all the ways I could add it to a sentence.
Ohhh, I remember finishing my last exam back in 90 or 91 before the summer break and finally allowing myself to read The Secret by Julie Garwood. The opening scene will probably be one I will never forget and allowed me to quickly sluff off the school year stress. I sat and read the entire book in 8 hours (I'm a slow reader) - I think my mother forced me to eat dinner. It's one of my fondest memories which is weird but I remember my father and brother trying to get a phone jack or something through my closet - I finally got up and showed them how it was done. Yeah, I was all that back then. But hey, they were harshing on my reader buzz!
Then there was the Kinsale novel that had me wondering why the people on the news were talking weird. For a week I was oddly conversant in old English.
These books obviously took me out of my life. I was part of the story somehow and it creeped over into my every day life.
I have to admit that there are times I have worried that maybe I'm too much in the 'zone' and I know my best bud admits to needing to re-invest in the real world when she 'zones out'.
All I know is that I'm ready to enter into the zone again. I want to be taken out of my real life for a while. It was only as my bud and I were talking that I remembered the 'zone'. I've been so long out of it but hearing her talk about it reminded me of that special bliss that can only happen when fully invested in a great book.
So how 'bout it? You in the 'zone'? Familiar with the 'zone'? Outside the 'zone' looking in? How about sharing those books that have put you in the 'zone'?

Guesting - My First Time!

Over the past week movies have been the order of the day.
Turns out I had opinions and thoughts on them so I wrote up my kind of half assed reviews and luckily for me the Ladies from The Boob Tube thought is was okay to print.
So my first - wait! I guess reviewed over at Sybil's for an Anne Stuart novel - so it's my second time as a guest - I feel special!! And since I'm a sleeper, I decided on a guest bed for the graphic.
Go here if you want to see my thoughts on Vantage Point, Shoot 'Em Up and Awake. C'mon, you know you wanna.
Now, I just need to contact Nath and Ames and see what they are currently reading. Maybe I can do a guest review or a two-some at Breezing Through. Cause I'm feeling all sassy.
Anyone want to do a two-some with me?
Bueller?
I'll totally read what you guys are reading. Seriously. I need to crack the slump. I think the sound will resonate through the universe so if you hear something scary, that's just me. Breaking Through.

AHAAA!!
Sure there are the busy times in life - today kids for the pool and BBQ and then Saturday the family for the day and BBQ (can I just say I'm sick of hot dogs and hamburgers already!!!) and the times when TV seems more important. And then there is the job (which is minimal but it does take up time) and my best bud who moved 3000 miles away so now we talk for hours on the phone at night.
But then I think of all of you and the jobs you have, the kids, the house work, the hustle and bustle of day time activities which are much different than night time. Shopping and errands in crowds would give me hives so I'm much happier in my nocturnal haze.
Then it hit me.
I have no where to sit and read.
Six months ago almost to the day, Bob moved his Lazyboy into the home office.
The home office or den, is so not for reading. Not sure what it is about the room but it doesn't work for me.
My reading room is our massive living room but I always sat in the Lazyboy. Good support for my back (doesn't happen in the other chairs), doesn't stink of - well, that's a different story and ... did I mention my back? Currently there are two couches (one is the leather one but I can feel the wood frame if I'm leaning on it like I tend to so not so good for reading and the other is Cody's couch and it's so out of here when the spirit calls him), two chairs with ottomans (Amber has taken up residence in the one I might sit in and the other is too close to the front door) and two new chairs but they are small and meant to be more decorative.
Let's not even start with the lighting in the room. I have one light that I move from chair to chair depending on where I want to read. Huge pain.
I can't read in bed or I would never sleep and my arms would fall asleep constantly and the loft/TV room is for TV and laundry and sitting with Bob.
So my task this next week is to find a new reading place. Or buy myself a Lazyboy.
Ow. It hurt just to type that. If I bought a Lazyboy I would never hear the end of it. So new place to read. Definitely something I must do immediately.
Oh, and I did mention to Bob that I was in a slump because he moved the Lazyboy to it's new place in the den and he told me he wasn't moving it back.
Mean.
I plan to retaliate by hiding his Home Depot credit card.
So where do you read? Can you read anywhere? Can you read hanging half off the bed (like I used to when I was 20) or do you need to have everything in place before settling down to read?

Why Did I Give Them Up?
There are books that are coming out by authors I once read (eg. Vicky Lewis Thompson, Iris Johansen etc) but for the life of me I can't remember why it is I decided to stop reading their books.
I was once a Nora Roberts reader. I remember exactly when I stopped picking up her books. Honest Illusions. That book rocked my heart and brain so bad that I got scared. Hey, I don't like sobbing while reading a book. The book was excellent but I haven't picked up a book that has been published by her since then.
Now, I have wanted to buy Nora Roberts again but Lor' Tundering Geez By, with reprints I couldn't figure out where I should pick back up. (I've been helped along by AAR Favourite Books by Favourite Authors and have bought the Born In books - I'm also going to raid LinnieGayl's Shelfari shelf and see what her fav is and pick it up (I see the Sea books are there also - I'm having a hard time tracking those down).
I know that I once enjoyed Vicky Lewis Thompson's many books. I know I stopped reading her before the Nerd books and I wasn't going to jump back in with those ones. I think I may have started one of her Nerd books and wondered where the author I once read had gone.
Ah, just tripped over Amanda Ashley - she broke my rule. She cured a vampire. Okay there was much more about it and the vampire was 'oh woe is me' and was a pain in the arse and when he was cured at the end of the book I just wanted to throw the book at the wall. Haven't picked her up again. So that's my own problem.
Still, I've noticed that she seems to be writing paranormals. So, is she writing vampire romances or something else entirely.
I know why I decided to leave Debbie Macomber behind. Her books were too sweet. I know the last few books of hers that I read were set in Alaska. And then there was the book with a blurb and premise that didn't pan out. Hey, if there is a promise of sex, maybe the sex should happen. I think the book was called Sooner or Later.
Here's the book description from Shelfari:
Dear Jack,
I may be a rough, tough solider of fortune but I've me my match!
I'm in Central America on a no-win job and regretting every minute. A woman named Letty Madden hired me to find her missing brother. I'd figured this prim and proper Texas postmistress would run and hide when I named my price: one night. I was wrong.
I swear the woman is my punishment for never giving a damn about anyone. She's as stubborn as a mule and soft and sweet . . . and hell, buddy, I'm in big trouble. Getting out alive is the least of my problems.
Murphy
Yep, clearly says to me that there is going to be a night of sex. My memory might be shaky but I believe Murphy changes his mind and drops the idea of his fee. I can't even remember if these two kissed on screen. So after this schmazzle, I never bought another of her books.
Too bad. After all, I loved Morning Comes Softly and I either found a used copy or need a copy. Can't remember exactly.
Iris Johansen is definitely a head scratcher. I don't remember much about her books except that bad things did happen and the hero was not always heroic. I may have stopped buying them because of the drama or (and this is my own bad memory) because one of her heroes was married with a child (or at least, he had a woman who bore his child who he was still on good terms with). Should mention this was a historical so I had a hard time figuring out how the H/H were going to live HEA if the hero was already married. This may have messed with my reading box from back then but I think I would be much more open in my reading today. Of course, I believe she has moved on to suspense.
I had to leave Julie Garwood behind - it took me many books to realize the magic was gone but once I figured that out I was able to step away and not look back. At least I have all her great books on my shelves.
I know there are many more authors and I might do a second post but I wanted to know if there are authors that fell off your radar but you can't remember why. Do you think you'll buy their books again or did you get lost like I did in reprint hell wondering if you were about to buy a book you've already read?

Woo-ho-Meh
Luckily my dad decided to go into work so he wasn't near the hotel or the protest (riot?). The guys who stayed behind at the hotel did get some tear gas after spray and there was a group who went shopping and they also felt the sting. I guess the men asked the machine gunned police - take a moment - if they thought it would be safe for them to go shopping. The police said 'Sure.' Tear gas and itching throats followed.
The machine guns would have been my first clue.
Reading?
Why yes, yes I am thank you. It's slow going but only because I am in an antsy/lazy frame of body.
Yeah.
The body is fritzing out and my brain is set on stupid but hey, one more week and I go to the docs. Hopefully things will start to look up. I'm more anxious (no, really?) but I'm ready for the mood to change.
I decided to get out of my box and try something I had just a hint of expectation from. The hint was from Caprice Crane's first book Stupid and Contagious which I enjoyed and gave me a few laughs.I keep reminding myself this isn't a romance but I was 10 pages into the book and needed to look at the back blurb to see who the hero was. After reading the back blurb I'm hoping for a fun read but it didn't mention any men so I could be barking up the wrong tree.
I'll put the blurb up so you can see what's it's about. I'm hoping for fun but this could end up in a bad cliche pile up.
Nah.
Positive energy, positive - ah, forget it!

Any Other Day
There was an anti-government protest in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia and the police broke out the tear gas. Since my father is staying in the city I'm wondering if he might have stumbled into this by accident. Then again, my father is always well informed compared to me and I guess there were warnings that this weekend would not be a good one.
Still, I'm worried.
Hopefully he'll e-mail us before going to bed - it's about 6:30pm there now and I sent an e-mail to him about a half an hour ago. I'll put Bob on alert when he gets up to watch the e-mail and hopefully I'll have worried for nothing.
I was sleeping this morning when I heard Bob ask me if my 'service engine' light had been on before we took the car in to Canadian Tire.
*groan*
The guy promptly told Bob when he asked why the light was on 'It was nothing we did!'
That alone got me out of bed by 4pm. All lathered up I was ready to take on the manager and then Bob saw me.
Bob: Uh, you wanna go out?
Me: Yep. Is the Canadian Tire service center still open?
Bob: No.
Me: *looking confused* The service center is closed?
Bob: Yep. They all went home.
Me: *and it dawns* They are open aren't they?
Bob: Uh, yeah.
Me: You're not going to let me loose on the manager, are you?
Bob: Mmmmm, no.
Me: Crap!
I was in fine fighting form too! My logic would have torn them to shreds. All that wasted energy. Makes me blue.
Nah. I'm fine (better mood lately but my anxiety has ratcheted up) but seriously, I would have loved to hear what they would have come up with as an excuse. Heads were going to roll.
Thwarted.
And good news for me but not so much for Ames.
I'm not alone and can now declare a slump.
I had been avoiding the topic but it's gotten ugly (I changed the numbers on the side board to note the DNF I had - Bad Cindy). I'm just not in the mood.
To sum up: C-Rex was waved off, Dad's in a city where some big stuff went down (and I thought I was only going to have to worry about mom!) and although I'm not alone, I'm in a reading slump.
I'm thinking it may be as bad as the 'Uber-slump' I had about 4 years ago.
Not good.

Beyond Reason
Last night I went to see my Dad off - he's going to Malaysia for the next 6 weeks. You know I'm not a flyer but I don't stop anyone else from doing it. Thing is, I know my Dad just doesn't like it so I get antsy. Sure, my family tells me to get a grip but I've heard the stories and seen the results. So off he goes on a 20 hour plane flight. That's a day of being in a tube and my Dad figured he wouldn't sleep. Ugh.
Did I mention my father is retired? Yeah. This is his secondary gig.
So I'm thinking I should be around for my Mom over the next month and a half and hopefully that won't create a new fresh pristine kind of hell. I just have to keep saying 'It's not about me' and maybe I'll do fine.
Bob was upset by my Dad going also. He doesn't get it and has said to me numerous times since we all found out that he wouldn't go anywhere without me. Funny thing is I really can't go anywhere without him!
Okay, I could. I just feel better when he's there.
So yesterday I'm waiting and waiting for Bob to get home so we can go see my Dad. Bob's work is extremely busy to the point where we haven't taken vacation so I knew Bob had to do some dancing to get out the door. By the time he got home my eyes were burning with the need for sleep and I knew it wasn't going to happen.
Bob and I got home about 7pm and I crashed until 10pm. I only got up because I knew Bob was still up and I was thinking about the prime rib I cooked the night before and how good the leftovers were going to be.
Eat. Sleep and Poop. My sad motivation for most things.
On the book front I'm still reading Sarah McCarty's Promises Linger and I have to say, I'm very surprised at how tame it is. Right now it's really just a sweet historical western romance with some words thrown around. And there is a fairly detailed plot. Who knew?
I know, I'm slow on the uptake.
Watch, the next half of the book will have me racing for the shower.

A Sitch Post
AAR AID ENDS by Noon Today
So if you were waiting till the last minute consider this your wake up call!
There is a link to the right, that flashing AAR cube will take you where you need to go.
If you noticed the title on this one you will see the word that Ward uses that grinds through my brain like broken glass.
Anyways, I'm obviously reading Lover Unbound and I"m on page three hundred and something so only like a million and a half pages to go. I'll finish before Christmas. So far nothing about the story has bothered me but I know from spoilers that something big is coming. Maybe having next to no expectations helps.
I'll tell you this much, Ward can weave one hell of a tale. I started the book feeling 'meh' and a chapter in and I was hooked. Hopefully I'll finish the book tonight and then I'm going to go through and read every ones take on it.
Renee, dear reading twin, have you read this one? I would like to read your thoughts if so or were you waiting for mine?
On a completely different front I have a question. Any of you have reading glasses?
I went about a year ago and had my eyes tested and the doc said the peepers were perfect (peepers, tell me I'm not being influenced, true?). Being a prospecting kind of doc he put up these lenses to show me the difference if I got reading glasses. Ohhhh, ahhhhhh, I can see the pretties even better! I asked my obvious question which was, 'would the glasses weaken my eyesight?' He told me no, they would just be like a power boost for my eyes.
The good news is I only need the glasses when I'm reading Ward (the small print is beyond tiny) but I can only read for about two hours and then my eyes start to blur. Right now, I can barely see the computer screen so yeah, I'll apologize now for any wacko things that are in this post.
Hey! I'm partially blinded not deaf and I totally heard that.
If I had to stay up for the next few hours and try to be normal (watch TV, drive) I wouldn't be able to because everything is blurred and almost double.
So if you have reading glasses, does this happen to you? Bobby has worn glasses since he was very young so he doesn't know what it's like to not wear them. I swear my eyes can't breath which I know is stupid but, it's the only way to explain it.
Oh and another wonderful moment? I went to the doc for that rash that popped up on my throat that was like the one on my tummy and was told that the cream I was using had too many steroids for use above the neck. Side effect? Acne.
Oh. My. God.
I'm a pimple person.
The damn rash is gone but the acne is brutal. Here's hoping it passes soon because it's ugly.
And docs know nothing about rashes. Yep. My doc said that even dermatologists don't know rash from rash so I got the 'can't cure it but we can tame it speech'. Of course, other symptoms would mean something but a rash, is just a rash is just a rash.
Wonder what blurred vision would net me. Khidding!
If you haven't been to Ames, she's getting a new puppy! Squeeeeee!!! You have to go check out the teeny tiny little pumpkin of love. She's looking for help with names. So far Esmeralda and Natasha are hitting my brain. Must be in a traditional frame of mind. I wonder if she would like Pumpkin?
All right, that's me for the day. I'll either post my pitiful Top *mumble* list for all to laugh at or I'll have finished Lover Unbound and feel the need to rant or just say 'hey, it worked for me'.
Shout out to the Southern California bloggers - you are all in my thoughts and prayers.
And where the fuck is Mailyn!!!????
Has anyone heard from her?
I just want to know she's still with us. I know she gets into creative surges but I haven't seen anything posted on the blog but maybe she is working on her other sites.
If you hear from her tell her Cindy is thinking of her.

The Fantastic Book Blues
I finally made the time to read my book!Ice Storm by Anne Stuart has now been read, hugged and lovingly placed on a shelf.
I can't tell you much cause I'm going to be doing a guest review over at Sybil's - I'll let you all know when it goes up.
I *just* finished reading and it's 12:30pm so obviously I stayed up way past my bedtime and I know I can't write anything coherent right now. I'll see if I can come up with a Cindy review tonight for Sybil.
Bob is up (of course) and has been doing more demo and such and he kept telling me I didn't have to finish the book in one sitting. Does he know me at all? So yeah, I finished and came in hugging the book. Bob understood it was a book not yet out and said, 'what are you going to do when the book finally hits the shelves? You won't be excited because you have already read it.' To which I replied 'I'm still going to buy a copy'. Bob being a good guy smiled and said 'you should, maybe it'll be different.'
What a sweetie. I can't imagine anything will be different unless Stuart does an epilogue but it's rare for her to end a book with too much gush.
So I'll be all gushy for her.
Squueeeeeeeee!
Okay, off to try and wind down although really, I'm just too happy and spazzy.

My Reading
Not well.
I think I'm in need of just a wonderfully sexy romance. No sci-fi, paranormal, werepeople, vampires, society brothers, wallflower sisters or series of any kind. I'm realizing that my library is not quite set up for easy access. It was my fault of course, because I decided I had to find a book before I jumped in the pool. Bob's yelling from downstairs 'are ya comin!?' Well, yeah, but I have to find a book!!
I ended up grabbing a historical Kresley Cole but I'm still not sold. How weird is that?
I think I really want to go book shopping so I'm going to take a nap and then drag the hubby over to Chapters late tonight. Ah, sweet revenge.
Edited: When I woke up Bob was in his jammas and I decided not to drag him out so no book shopping yet.
I don't like having my books set out to be alphabetical but I can tell I need to at least have them sorted by author. For example, I should have all of Kleypas' books together and such. Why? Because I was looking for a Kleypas I haven't read (I know I haven't read all her Bow Street Runner books) but I didn't have time to move the books in the front to see the ones in behind. I'm afraid to try her really early books in case the sex is too sweet - I remember people were upset with Lady Sophie's Lover because there was more sex than usual for her. I thought the book was bloody brilliant!
So if you have read most of Kleypas' backlist, do you have any suggestions as to where I can start? I have heard there are other Bow Street Runner books and I know I haven't read them all. Anyways, I have not read (as far as I can recall) Only With Your Love, When Strangers Marry, and then anything published before 2000.
Where Dreams Begin 08/00
Someone to Watch Over Me 05/99
Stranger in My Arms 07/98
Because You're Mine 09/97
Somewhere I'll Find You 10/96
Prince of Dreams 8/95
Midnight Angel 1/95 (reissued)
Then Came You 6/93
I'm chalking it up to stressing over the other house and looking around here and wondering where I'm going to find the time to get stuff done! Apparently we are going to have the house 'staged' which is a good idea but I don't want to pay too much so I've been thinking that if the 'stagers' will move the furniture then they can plunder our house. Afterall, I have three beds - two of which aren't being used. I have two desks (Bob built the oak one I'm at) and then another gorgeous one in the living room. Also, since I'm not enamoured of the decor in our living room I never sit in there so they are welcome to the chairs with the ottomans. Not my leather couch though. Or my rug. Some things I can't replace ;)
So fingers crossed.
But until then, maybe I need to do some re-reading to get my mojo back.
